Ulrich Helps Sponsor Daffodil Giveaway

Some communities in Council District 32 might soon seem a bit brighter after a forthcoming daffodil giveaway sponsored by Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park) and New Yorkers for Parks.
The independent citywide green space research and advocacy organization gives away approximately 500,000 daffodil bulbs to individuals and groups planting them in public spaces across the five boroughs, such as parks, school yards, community gardens, and street tree pits.
Founded in 2001 as a living memorial to commemorate the lives lost during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, more than a million daffodils were planted in the Big Apple that initial year. As one of the first flowers to bloom each spring, daffodils are said to symbolize the resiliency and strength of the city.
“I am thrilled to announce that my office has partnered with New Yorkers for Parks to sponsor this initiative,” Ulrich said. “I’d like to thank New Yorkers for Parks on this collaborative effort, which will help bring some of our district’s public spaces to life. I encourage all community residents and groups who are interested in participating to register for this giveaway.”
According to NY4P, more than seven million daffodil bulbs have been planted across the city since 2001 as a result of the annual giveaway.
“The Daffodil Project is emblematic of so much of what makes New Yorkers great—we’re not afraid to get dirty and work together out of love for our city,” said Lynn Kelly, executive director of New Yorkers for Parks.
Residents who would like to receive daffodils at no cost must register in advance. Registration is now open and will close Wednesday, Sept. 5. To register, contact Marjorie Coello at (718) 738-1083, or mcoello@council.nyc.gov. All recipients must pick up their daffodil bulbs at Ulrich’s district office, located at 93-06 101st Ave. in Ozone Park.
Distribution dates are to be determined and will be announced in the coming weeks, Ulrich said.
