Learn why natural areas are so important in New York City.
Why are natural areas important in New York City? In every borough, natural areas are helping to keep our City livable. - Natural areas decrease pollution, urban runoff and sedimentation in our waterways and buffer air pollution in a city with one of the highest asthma rates in the country.
- Natural areas mitigate flooding and the resulting damage, and provide recreational opportunities for residents and visitors, like hiking, biking and bird watching.
- Natural areas support life in our busy metropolis— plants and animals call the City home, too.
Why is the Natural Areas Initiative important?Unfortunately, some natural areas are inappropriately used for dumping or are not adequately maintained. With increased support of natural areas, the City parks system will be better equipped to protect and preserve our natural heritage. That is what the Natural Areas Initiative is all about — getting New Yorkers involved in protecting our open spaces. Conservation, stewardship and maintenance are urgently needed. Where can I find natural areas near me?Over the last five years, NY4P and our partner NYC Audubon have created a comprehensive database of NYC’s natural areas. The Database is a resource for learning about natural areas and is a tool to educate New Yorkers the value of these spaces. It’s up to us to make a difference. Find a natural area near you.
