The Governor's Island Preservation and Education Corporation (GIPEC)-- the entity created to determine the future of the Island-- yesterday threw out all of the development proposals that were on the table, including a plan by Nickelodeon to create a Nick theme park for kids (whew). This is a good thing for another section of the Island-- the part that will be converted to parkland. According to the Post: Instead, GIPEC is shifting its immediate focus toward improving island transportation, creating new parkland and finding tenants for historic buildings on the north end. Wow, focusing on parkland before commercial development? What a concept (even if accidental)!
