NY4P’s Daffodil Project is the largest volunteer effort in NYC history and living memorial in remembrance of the victims of 9/11. Started in the spring following 9/11, the Daffodil Project is now in its 20th year.

All 2021 distributions have now taken place. If you were not able to attend one of these events, then you cannot pick up any bulbs unfortunately. They've all been given away for the 2021 season.

2021 Distributions took place on:

• Sunday, September 19: Staten Island – Brookfield Park
• Sunday, September 26: Manhattan – Union Square
• Saturday, October 2: Queens – Far Rockaway at the RISE Center at 58-03 Rockaway Beach Blvd
• Sunday, October 3: Bronx – Mill Pond Park
• Sunday, October 10: Queens – The Overlook at Forest Park
• Sunday, October 17: Brooklyn – Grand Army Plaza

 

For 20 years, NY4P has worked with over 400,000 New Yorkers to create the largest volunteer effort in NYC. Every spring since 2002, New York City emerges from winter and daffodils burst through soil in parks, playgrounds, and public spaces across the city. These symbols of rebirth are the world’s largest living memorial to the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Over 8 million daffodil bulbs have been distributed for free, planted by volunteers in the fall and then celebrated as some of the first flowers to bloom come spring.

This tradition was born thanks to a gift of a million daffodil bulbs from Hans van Waardenburg, a Dutch bulb supplier, and the City of Rotterdam, who coordinated with NY4P Board Member and public garden designer Lynden Miller in the aftermath of 9/11. In collaboration with then Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, 10,000 volunteers joined NY4P to plant the bulbs across NYC. In 2007, Mayor Bloomberg named the daffodil the city’s official flower.

In 2021, on the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and the Daffodil Project, NY4P worked with artist Michael De Feo to create a new logo and look for the project, and thanks to generous sponsors, NY4P is able to double the bulb order to plant hope and bring yellow bursts to NYC in spring 2022.

Today, we are honored to continue this powerful memorial to the victims of the September 11 attacks, and the spirit that defines the thousands of New Yorkers who join together to make their neighborhoods, and their city, a more beautiful place to live.
